Winter Road-Tripping XI to the Engadin with Genesis

When embarking on your winter journey, ensuring safety, comfort, and a touch of elegance is paramount. This is precisely what we accomplished during our road trip to Sils Maria and St. Moritz, opting for the luxurious Genesis GV80 SUV. Our days were filled with alpine skiing, leisurely walks in the Fex Valley, and delightful dining experiences at our favorite places. We enjoyed visiting the permanent installation, “Skyspace Piz Uter” by James Turell, situated at the Hotel Castel in Zuoz and there was a Gerhard Richter exhibition spread across three exhibition venues in the Engadin.
Road trips, even in winter offer numerous advantages, particularly when dealing with the transportation of various sports equipment and attire for diverse occasions. After all, it was New Year’s Eve and in St. Moritz, you have to be well prepared.

Additionally, when travelling with a car, the spontaneity to extend your journey is always a delightful possibility to consider.
You could choose any car for this journey, but driving the Genesis GV80 in Matterhorn White (!) was an experience that underscored the essence of the entire journey. A really unique experience.

Here are just a few assets that we liked particularly about the car:

Snow Mode: Enhancing traction on snow-covered roads, Snow Mode adjusts throttle response, engine shift points, and transmission settings for a smoother start.

Automated Parking: The car can park itself. Engage park mode, release the brake, press the button, and the car autonomously maneuvers into the parking space.

Unpark Function: With a simple press of a button on the keychain, the car can be automatically driven forward or backward out of a parking space, a particularly helpful feature in crowded lots, especially when wearing ski shoes.

Comfort: Rear-seat passengers enjoy aircraft-style reclining seats for added comfort.

And here is a list of the places the Genesis GV80 has taken us:

The day starts early with a morning run on the Cresta piste or a cross-country ski run along the lakes. You deserve a treat, so we recommend the recently opened spa at Hotel MAISTRA160 in Pontresina, where we particularly enjoyed the open fireplace after a relaxing steam bath and a dip in the outdoor pool.

The Engadin region is renowned for its diverse array of galleries, art shows, pop-ups, and events. Notably, three exhibitions by Gerhard Richter were held at the Nietzsche Haus in Sils, the Hauser & Wirth gallery, and the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz. Additionally, we had the opportunity to explore the remarkable open-air installation, Skyspace Piz Uter, created by James Turrell. This captivating installation is situated at the Hotel Castel in Zuoz.

The next NOMAD, a travelling art fair that brings together the world’s leading galleries showcasing high quality collectable design, will take place in the empty Hotel Eden in St. Moritz.

We love quietness, a true luxury which you can experience inside the car when driving and if you like winter hiking around the Fex Tal above Sils.

There are many villages in the Engadin which are picturesque and worth a visit, splattered with historical sgraffito houses, especially in Sils Maria, Bever, Pontresina and many more.

The period between Christmas and New Year’s can become quite bustling, offering a plethora of sights and activities. Take a scenic drive along the lake from Sils to St. Moritz, hit the slopes on Corviglia for a skiing adventure, or indulge in a delightful high tea experience at the iconic Badrutt’s Palace hotel.

The Engadin is synonymous with grand hotels, and I find immense joy in visiting them. This creates an ideal road trip from Sils to Pontresina, where one can relish an aperitif in the recently adorned bar and smoking room of the Grandhotel Kronenhof or savor a cozy dinner at the Kronenstübli.
