Taking care of yourself: Time outdoors

By now we not only know that it is safe to practice social distancing outside, but also that an escape to the countryside, a walk in the park or a ride on the bike along the river is life enhancing and boosting mental health.

This week we would like to introduce a series of specialists from the Original F.X Mayr, who share with us their knowledge about improving our health and strengthening our immune system, besides creating a balanced life in turbulent times.

Today we start with something you can do anywhere and anytime, also alone: Spending as much time as you can outdoors.

THE FOREST IS OUR HOUSE
Studies have shown that going for a walk in the forest lowers blood pressure and increases mental health. It stimulates our senses. The smell of earth and the movement of trees and leaves is like a meditation.

TIME OFF
decrease the amount of time spent in front of your screens to avoid blue lights. Take some time off, if you can’t make sure to integrate breaks in-between screen time. Your eyes will be grateful.

DIFFERENT PATH
Get off the path when going for a run in the forest and run cross country. You should only do that if you are an experienced runner and with proper running shoes. The unevenness of the path is like a mental training that keeps your mind working quickly.

CHANGE LOCATIONS
If you can, avoid repetitive walkways and add different routes for outdoor walks. Also in different sceneries like along the river, in a local park and maybe at the lake on weekends. Even if the distances are similar the air will be different and, in every way, beneficial to your health.

REDUCE INFLAMMATION
When inflammation goes into overdrive, it’s associated with a wide range of illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, and cancer. Spending time in nature may be one way to help keep that in check.

EXERCISE OUTSIDE
Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues may all be eased by some time in nature, especially when combined with exercises. If you’re feeling down or tired, go for a walk rather than lying on the couch.

BY THE WATER
It is a proven fact that the colour green and the presence of water improve self- esteem and mood and your performance will be also much better. Instead of taking the car or public transportation, walk to your next meeting and arrive with a well oxygenated brain.
