The most wanted jewellery this summer comes from the Ocean.

It seems that Sara Beltrán takes her inspiration, style and living force from the ocean. The sea became the main topic of the jewellery line she founded in 2006, Dezso. Her entire aesthetic and vision is a sea inspired platform you want to join immediately. Wearing her jewellery is like melting into the waves of the ocean and most pieces are parts from the ocean, as she uses what she finds, glossy preserved shells, shark fin figurines and much more.

We had a chat with the Mexican jewellery designer, who has spent many years in India and now she lives and works in New York.

IRMA: How would you describe your connection to the ocean and nature?
SARA BELTRÁN: I love the ocean it’s so beautiful, powerful and I have lots of respect for the ocean.

IRMA: You design with several ancient working techniques to create your jewellery. Where did you learn about that and how do you develop this skill into modern design?
SARA BELTRÁN: I moved to India in 2008 and every technique I used I have learned while developing the set up for my production. I love handmade pieces and my line it’s all handmade trough different artisan in Jaipur.
I love siting watching the carvers it’s something that really fascinated me, and you can see that in my collection, 90% it’s carvings, I don’t think you can see any other collection like that in the world.
I have spent immense number of hours with that for years every morning while I lived and visit India. I think they are like miniature sculptures.

IRMA: The sea provides you with an endless fundus of inspiration. Which part is the richest for you and why?
SARA BELTRÁN: The entire sea world, I respect every aspect of it.

IRMA: How do you manage to be inspired and creative during the pandemic?
SARA BELTRÁN: I have created through the years a very good relationship with my manufactures in India. Although it is not the same as me being there, we still managed a great way of making the magic happen. It’s the first time in my career I haven’t been to India in a long time. Normally I go 3 to 4 times a year. I haven’t been since October 2019. I am so excited to go back.
