Palácio de Tavira. A restored 19th-century palace right in the historic centre. The hotel occupies the former aristocratic residence of the Tavares family — high ceilings, wrought-iron balconies, a red lacquered door, and a courtyard shaded by palms and striped umbrellas.

WHAT TO PACK
Fabric totes and jelly shoes for the beach. Think a fringed, hand-woven bag slung over one shoulder, a beaded little pochette for the essentials, and a pair of sparkly jelly loafers that go straight from cobblestones to sand without missing a step.

Mirsal. The restaurant of Palácio de Tavira, led by chef Fábio Domingues. Order the polvo à lagareiro — meltingly tender grilled octopus with olive oil — the slow-cooked lamb served with couscous, apricot and almond and a yoghurt foam, and the bluefin tuna tartare with crispy spices.

NA PRAIA
The beach isn’t always easy to get to, but it’s definitely worth it. You’ll need free hands to carry everything along — a light tote or backpack is a must, whether it’s a printed nylon rucksack or a canvas tote you can throw over one shoulder and forget about.
BEACHES
Praia do Barril. Reached via the little train from Pedras d’el Rei, known for its “anchor cemetery” and a calmer, family-friendly feel.
