Carolin Ehret infuses everything she creates with a sense of Mediterranean light, even when translating her signature motifs into winter tones. Ahead of her participation in the Rosewood Munich X-Mas Market organised by IRMASWORLD, we spoke to the artist about colour, place and the quiet rituals that influence her ceramic creations.

IRMA: What is your association with the colour blue?
CAROLIN EHRET: Blue is actually one of my main colours that I always use. Blue reminds me of the ocean and summer.
Freshness and happiness.

IRMA: Tell me about the winter colour schemes you are working on at the moment.
CAROLIN EHRET: I am using our Meltemi elements and changing them to a winter colour scheme. Since the palm is more of a summer symbol, I am working on the “Beachwalk” design using colours like chestnut, dark reds and dark greens.

IRMA: You had your studio in Athens before, and now you are back in Germany with your atelier on Lake Starnberg. How does this environment reflect on your work?
CAROLIN EHRET: Since my studio in Starnberg is so unique, I don’t think about my surroundings.
I can see part of the lake, a wild garden and art pieces I made years ago, and I can hear the monotonous noise of the train. This place somehow allows me to work freely.

IRMA: You have set up a small art school at your studio where you run ceramic art courses. What are they about?
CAROLIN EHRET: I actually run a very creative and super fun open workshop in my studio once a week. We create advanced pieces as well as basic but lovely ceramic trials. For me, it’s all about sharing the knowledge I’ve gathered over the last two years at several amazing ceramic studios in Athens.
I love the atmosphere of a busy studio where everyone is focused and excited.

IRMA: Please tell us what you will be showing at our Rosewood Christmas market.
CAROLIN EHRET: At the Rosewood Christmas market, I will be showing some of my new “Beachwalk” reliefs in winter colours, as well as some new ceramic pieces, such as candle holders, wind lights and bowls. These are actually from my Antiparos series, called Sorros. I tried to create unique decorative pieces for island houses, but of course I changed the colour scheme for the season.
