There’s no place like home, especially in the morning when you like to take your time with breakfast and get an easy start into the day. When traveling, one of the most important tips for a foreign city is a good breakfast place with that cosy just-like-home feeling to start your day.
Here are IRMA’s favorites:
BUBBY’S
New York
Tribeca favorite Bubby’s has been serving breakfast or brunch every single day for the last 25 years (and that is an eternity in New York). Classic morning options like eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros and a smoked salmon bagel are served every day until 4:00 p.m. For something sweeter, consider the buttermilk biscuits with Vermont butter and homemade jam.

ROAMERS
Berlin
Call it a hidden gem or a diamond in the rough, Roamers in Neukölln is the sort of place that looks like you have stepped into your friends’ live-in kitchen — if these friends are the cooking, kinfolk-sort of type. If the look is makeshift, it’s not because of some clever interior designer: tables and chairs are flea market finds or were built by the owner’s friends and family. The kitchen is small, but it turns out terrific breakfast items like poached eggs, various sandwiches like their avocado classic with heaps of cilantro, as well as a terrific homemade banana bread.

THE DAYLESFORD FARM SHOP
London
For a wholesome start into the day, visit the Daylesford Farm Shop. Stocked with all the fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan cheese and breads as well as organic meat from the Daylesford farms in the Cotswolds, it brings all the good from the countryside into the middle of the city. So after what feels like a stroll over the market, take a seat in their organic cafe and have a healthy, guilt-free start to the day with cold-press juices, home-made nut granola and flax seed Bircher muesli or a more hearty breakfast fried eggs and cured ham.

THE ALLIS
Istanbul
Probably one of the most stylish places to have breakfast in Istanbul, The Allis still manages to convey this cosy living room atmosphere. It is part of the Soho House and serves as the neighborhood’s social hub. Take a seat in one of the cosy velvet lounge chairs or on the leafy outdoor terrace and tuck into a zucchini muffin, oatmeal with fruit, slices of orange with ricotta, pistachios, honey and mint or a classic Turkish breakfast platter with tomato cucumber salad, local cheeses, marinated olives and more and enjoy the views of the Palazzo Corpi. It’s so beautiful, you might just want to come back for afternoon tea.

WULFF & KONSTALI
Copenhagen
The industrial feel of the neighborhood continues at this cool food shop and cafe in the harbourfront area of Islands Brygge in Amager. Inside, it’s Nordic style at its best — light grey walls, a giant wooden table lit up by oversized, industrial-style lamps and a mix of wicker chairs, stools and benches, light flooding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. If you are lucky, the big purple sofa in the back is free. Their baked goods are excellent, but they also serve hot dishes and sandwiches. It’s accompanied by their own favourite brew, Kontra coffee.

THE BROKEN ARM
Paris
Set on a quiet corner across from the Square du Temple, The Broken Arm is a hip concept store-cum-café with a distinctly Scandinavian vibe. You can browse their carefully curated collection of fashion and design items in its bright retail space after sipping excellent coffee and tea in its adjacent cafe, which also has a small menu of sandwiches, salads, soups and planches that are served all day.
12 Rue Perrée, 75003 Paris
FRENCHIE TO GO
Just down the street from the impossible to get into Frenchie, you can enjoy chef Gregory Marchand’s creations at his latest outpost, a popular cafe and takeaway that deserves kudos simply because everything, and we mean everything, is made in house, from pastrami to beef sausages, smoked bacon and trout, sauerkraut, scones and muffins, even the ginger beer! The breakfast bacon sandwich served on an English muffin, with or without eggs or cheddar cheese, is legendary.
