STAY
Vermelho. Where color meets craft. Christian Louboutin’s first hotel, or one of his private villas for rent nearby, is the perfect base for exploring Melides.
The gardens alone, landscaped by Louis Benech, are worth the trip: lush, sublime, and rendered in different shades of red flowers, the color that made Louboutin famous. Rooms and villas are dressed in hand-painted tiles, colorful fabrics and antiques sourced from across Portugal by Louboutin and interior designer Madalena Caiado, and the hotel’s restaurant, Xtian, serves a menu that is both local and seasonal, with a wine pairing from the region.

Vida Dura. Step into Vida Dura and let the ceramics and flowers inspire you. Every table setting here feels like a small work of art, curated with an eye for craftsmanship and Portuguese tradition by three friends who share the same passion.
Alongside handmade ceramics, the shop stocks textiles and eco-conscious pieces sourced from across the region, some of which found their way into Vermelho’s own interiors. Staff are happy to share the story behind each piece — and to send you off with a fresh bouquet of flowers.

CRAFT
Casa da Moagem
Museum, Pottery and Art Shop, in the heart of Melides, is a treasure trove of local craft. Handmade pieces, honest materials, and pure Alentejo character fill every corner of this small village shop, which doubles as a museum on the second floor, showing a current summer exhibition with work by Anna Silva, Vik Muniz and many more.

WITH KIDS
Biblioteca na Praia. On your way to the beach with the kids, stop by the little blue-striped house, Biblioteca na Praia (the “beach library”), a children’s book oasis where imagination gets to rent a good read for the day.
The initiative, run by the Câmara Municipal de Grândola, brings a small lending library to the sand at Melides and neighboring Carvalhal each summer, with a selection for adults too, so a good book is never far from the towel.

DESIGN
Circular. An address for art lovers. Circular is a studio-gallery founded by the architecture practice Dellekamp + Maass, an evolving space for architecture, art, ideas and encounters, with changing exhibitions throughout the year.
And yes, beyond the gallery walls, the practice also designs holiday homes, so it is worth a stop even if you are house-hunting rather than gallery-hopping.
