IRMA: What was the initial idea behind the concept of your brand?
KALA MATIA: The initial idea behind our brand Kala Matia was to reinvent a dress we used to wear as a child in Greece. We wanted to modernize its design by simplifying their styles and introducing them in a fresh palette of new colours. We wanted these dresses to be versatile and accessible, making them statement pieces that everyone could wear. Additionally, we are committed to local production, ensuring each dress is made with care and craftsmanship in our community.
IRMA: How does a day looks like in your design studio?
KALA MATIA: A day in our design studio is always dynamic and varied, as we don’t have a typical routine. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, spanning from management to creation, production, and marketing. As a small company, we are deeply involved in every aspect of our business.
IRMA: What is the message, in terms of sustainability in Fashion you want to spread with your brand?
KALA MATIA: The message we want to get across through our brand of Greek dresses is to consume with a clear conscience. Our dresses are timeless, suitable for all ages and body types. They are made to last from generation to generation.
IRMA: What is your favourite Greek island , why and what do you like to do most there?
KALA MATIA: Our favourite Greek island is Skiathos, located in the Sporades. It is a very densely wooded island with beautiful beaches. When we’re there, we love to take a boat out for a cruise at sea. We enjoy stopping in secluded coves to swim and sometimes have the chance to see dolphins!
IRMA: How does a perfect summer wardrobe looks like for you, when traveling light?
KALA MATIA: For us, a perfect summer wardrobe when traveling light includes a few essential items like a good SPF 50 sun cream, 2-3 swimsuits, a sarong, denim shorts, tank tops, and t-shirts. We also pack two Kala Matia dresses—one with sleeves for the evening and a sleeveless one for daytime ease. A versatile leather belt, 2 pairs of flat sandals, a basket, a cap, and a stylish pair of creole earrings complete the ensemble. These carefully chosen items ensure you are prepared for any summer adventure while maintaining effortless style.
IRMA: And a perfect holiday lunch, what is on your table?
KALA MATIA: Undeniably a grilled fish, Chorta (a kind of cooked spinach), a Greek salad, tatziki and sometimes some good homemade fries.
IRMA: Your next step, tell us about it?
KALA MATIA: The next step for Kala Matia would be to create other models such as pants, shirts, tops… and we’d also like to collaborate with other Greek brands such as leather shoes, jewellery… and create custom collections-we’ve got lots of ideas!
IRMA: Your favourite spot in Athens, when having only a short stop over to hop further on a greek island vacation.
KALA MATIA: We love the Mona Hotel in Psiri. Not far away, the excellent tavern, Atlantikos, offers excellent grilled fish. We like to stroll around Monasteraki and cool off in the National Garden of Athens.
