Tavira has it all: a walkable historic old town, wide Atlantic beaches within easy reach, and now a boutique hotel that quietly holds the two together. Palácio de Tavira is a modern townhouse hotel built inside an 18th-century palace, and it wears both identities at once.
Entering on Praça Dr. António Padinha, in the heart of Tavira’s old town, gives an immediate sense of that duality: the former stone doorstep of the palace’s belle étage leads straight into a contemporary restaurant, and that same design language — ancient materials paired with clean, pared-back lines — runs like a red thread through the entire property, operated by the Spanish hospitality group Marugal. It’s a formula that earned the hotel this year’s Best Boutique Hotel award at the Publituris Portugal Travel Awards.
Here’s how a weekend inside it unfolds.
THE HOTEL

Palácio de Tavira. The staff welcome you the way you’d be welcomed into someone’s home. Past the air-conditioned reception and bar, the space opens onto a lush green courtyard, where a glass of lemon-infused water or a cava from the house is the first order of business.

From there it’s on to the room: contemporary furniture in earthy materials and clean structures, the aesthetic Marugal has built its name on. Rooms in the historical Palácio wing look out over the piazza; those in the newer Medina wing face an inner courtyard washed in white walls against the Algarve sky.

It would be easy to never leave — this 36-room boutique hotel gives you plenty of reasons to stay in.

TAVIRA’S OLD TOWN

But Tavira itself has plenty to offer too: small craftsmen’s ateliers, a good spread of shops and restaurants, and beautiful historic streets running along the river and up into the hillside town. Follow along on our Instagram, @irmasworld, for more.
THE BEACHES

When you’ve had enough of wandering, the beaches are close by, most within a 10 to 20 minute drive, or a little further on foot if you fancy the walk. This is the Atlantic, after all, so pack accordingly.

WELLNESS & ROOFTOP

Luma Wellness. A garden path leads down to the spa, or up to the rooftop, where twin plunge pools look out over the old town’s terracotta roofs. Book a massage and ask for the treatment room with windows that open onto the garden while you relax and refuel your skin. Afterwards, take tea in the garden, or a drink up at the rooftop pools.

DINING
Mirsal. The hotel’s own restaurant is run by chef Fábio Domingues, who turns out Mediterranean and Algarve-inspired plates from octopus à lagareiro to saffron risotto.
Bar da Lua. Named, fittingly, for the moon — start with a cocktail here before heading out to one of the many restaurants in town.

A weekend in Tavira is exactly this: led by the rhythm of nature, drawn between modernity and historic corners, an ideal escape to reset before la rentrée. Fly into Faro; from there, Palácio de Tavira is about a 30-to-40-minute drive away.
“Some places don’t ask you to choose between history and comfort — Palácio de Tavira simply gives you both.”
